February 2023

February started with an invitation to attend an Army Engagement Event at Magna in Rotherham. This was a very informative evening and it was good to be able to represent Girlguiding at an external event which previously hadn’t been possible because of Covid.

A few days later we were privileged to be invited by the Master Cutler, Dame Julie Kenny, to take part in a Discovery event for the Master Cutler’s Challenge at Wentworth Woodhouse. This included a reception and tour of the house as well as finding out more about the plans that the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust have to develop education and community engagement programmes. I hope you have been able to enter the competition to design a challenge badge for some of the planned activities?

It was a pleasure to present Jean, Eevi and Maureen with Thanks Awards as they stepped down from their roles with 33rd Doncaster Brownies with 103 years of service in the unit between them!

On the same evening it was lovely to present Ava from 54th Doncaster Guides with a Hero Award. Ava along with a friend organised a charity event at our local community centre, they held a talent contest and ran a cake, tombola and handmade gift stalls and raised a fantastic £360 for Diabetes UK and Mcmillan. They chose both of these charities as they are both close to their hearts. Ava has used this towards one of her interest badges and her leaders also nominated her for the Hero Award for showing fantastic citizenship and initiative!

I was invited to a lovely Thinking Day evening for the South Anston, North Anston and Woodsetts units in Rother Valley Division. Girls from all sections completed a variety of activities including planting seeds and making a dove for peace before coming together for a ceremony where the Guides lit candles to reflect on the Guide Law and different issues faced by girls around the world. This was followed by a lively indoor campfire!

It was a pleasure to present Laura with a Thanks Award at the Rother Valley Thinking Day evening. Laura from 57th Rotherham Brownies was nominated for a Thanks Award by her Unit Leader, Jean. Despite suffering from poor health, Laura raised £280 for the unit by making and selling cards. She also put together card making kits for the Brownies. Well done Laura!

I joined volunteers from Barnsley West on Thinking Day and enjoyed making a model Rainbow in a workshop from Jumping Clay.
